It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve as the principal at Miami Elementary. I would like to take a few lines to briefly explain my educational background as well as a description of my family and my interests. To conclude, I would like to share with the Miami stakeholders a snapshot of the Miami school improvement plan.


I am a 1990 graduate of Jefferson High School. From there I extended my education with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and U.S. History from Purdue University. I began working in Lafayette School Corporation in 1996 as an elementary physical education teacher as well as the head coach for the boys and girls tennis teams at Jefferson High School. While teaching, I went back to school to obtain my Master's degree and license in education administration. I served as the principal at Linnwood Elementary on the north end of Lafayette for two years. I started my first year here at Miami Elementary in the fall of 2005.
I have been married to my wife Leigh for fifteen years. We have a nine year old son named Dean and a two year old son named Derek.  I enjoy spending time with my family as well as reading fictional FBI and CIA thriller novels. Every weekend I usually have an hour or two to spend playing tennis. I have to fit this in each week to stay in shape so I can keep pace with the high energy elementary student body.


It has been a pleasure working with the students, staff and parents at Miami Elementary over the past six years. It is the mission at Miami Elementary to nurture, inspire, and empower every student. We believe this mission can be accomplished with the school improvement plan that is in place at Miami.


This plan includes but is not limited to:

  •  Uninterrupted reading and math blocks in kindergarten through fifth grade
  •  Whole group instruction using Harcourt math and Scott Foresman reading core programs
  •  Targeted small group instruction (reading and math)
  • K-5 Story Grammar Markers to engage students in written response
  •  Frequent progress monitoring of students to assess the impact of the core and small group instruction i.e. Acuity, DIBELS, MClass Math, STAR Math and Reading etc.
  • Positive Behavior Support System i.e.:
  •  Principal’s 200 Club
  •  Classroom Chief Tickets
  • Monthly grade level collaboration meetings to view student math and reading scores and determine how to meet the diverse learning needs in each classroom
  •  Weekly general education/special education problem solving meetings to address the needs of struggling students
  • Second through fourth grade high reading achievers utilizing Junior Great Books during the additional 45 minute reading block (STAR)
